What You Should Know about Tooth-Colored Fillings

For many years, dentists relied on silver amalgam as a filling material. Although amalgam is quite strong and durable, it changes color over time. In fact, after several years, silver amalgam can actually look almost black in color. In addition, some patients have concern about the low levels of mercury that are present in the silver amalgam material, although that has never been shown to have adverse health effects on dental patients.

For those reasons, tooth-colored fillings are a very popular choice for many dental patients. Similar to silver amalgam, the composite material used for tooth-colored fillings is extremely strong and durable. Your dentist can create the composite material to very closely match the shade of your regular teeth. And, unlike silver amalgam, tooth-colored fillings won’t change color as the years go by.
