Scientists from the University of Miami examined the question of whether yoga qualifies as an aerobic workout. Volunteers were monitored during workouts to assess aerobic activity. “Power” yoga, performing yoga moves at a substantially increased pace, was deemed to be a high-quality aerobic workout. Yoga performed at traditional speeds burned far fewer calories and provided much less of an aerobic workout. The scientist note that the aerobic benefits from yoga are in addition to traditional psychological benefits provided through yoga participation.
